What is Mandoremi?

Mandoremi is an app for Chinese language learners. It tells you how hard a Chinese song would be for you to memorize, based on your vocabulary level, and identifies which words you should learn next to improve your language skills. It measures every song against what you know: your HSK level (HSK 3.0, levels 1–6 plus the 7–9 band) and your personal known-words list. For every song you get:

• Coverage — the share of the lyrics you can already read.
• Learning value — a 0–100 score of how efficient the song is to study: it rewards new words that repeat often, few distinct unknowns, and comfortable (~90%) coverage.
• Color-coded lyrics — every word tinted by difficulty, with a click-up showing its HSK level and English meaning (CC-CEDICT):

How "learning value" is scored

Every song gets a 0–100 learning value for your level. It's a weighted blend of three things (the weights live in data/config.json):

• Coverage fit (40%) — a bell curve centred on 90% known. A song that's almost all familiar is boring; one that's mostly unknown is demoralising. The sweet spot is a song where you already know ~90% and meet the last 10% fresh. Scoring 90% known gives full marks; 70% or 99% both score lower.
• Few unknown words (25%) — the smaller the share of distinct words that sit above your level, the better. A song with 200 unique words where only 5 are new scores higher than one with 40 unique words where 20 are new.
• Repetition of the unknown (35%) — how often those new words repeat (capped at 4 appearances). A word you hear four times sticks; a word you hear once is gone. This is why a short, hook-heavy song can outrank a denser one.

In short: learning value rewards songs that are just over your head, with their hard words coming back often enough to actually learn. It's a per-song, per-your-level number — the same track scores differently for an HSK 3 learner and an HSK 6 one, because "unknown" means something different to each.

• Words to learn — the song's new vocabulary, sorted easiest-first, with English meanings (Anki/CSV export ships with the paid tier).
• Grammar patterns — 46 constructions detected in the lyrics, from 了/着/过 aspect to separable verbs (见你一面), potential complements (听不懂) and correlatives (越…越…).
• A recommended study order across a whole playlist — which song to learn next for the most payoff at your level.

How it works

Try it with your own lyrics — no account. Paste any Chinese lyrics on the home page and you get the full analysis instantly: stats, colored lyrics, grammar, words to learn. Traditional characters are converted automatically. Nothing is stored.

With a free account, songs and playlists are saved and analyzed once, then re-scored instantly as you move your level slider or update your known-words list. Import a public playlist by URL from Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, or NetEase (网易云) — Spotify and YouTube show at most the first 100 tracks — then paste lyrics per song, or pick songs the database has already analyzed and skip straight to studying. The playlist view compares all your songs side by side: coverage, learning value, vocabulary richness, and the ★ recommended order.

Your vocabulary, not just your level. Upload a personal known-words list and every song is re-judged against it — words you know count as known everywhere, whatever their HSK level, and one-click + buttons grow the list as you study.

Roadmap

1. Licensed lyric display — auto-analyze already scores songs without pasting; the paid tier will add the licensed lyric text itself, so the color-coded view works with one click. Licensing talks are the top priority.
2. Deeper playlist integration — exploring official-API imports past the 100-track caps and a re-sync button so playlists stay current (depends on platform approval, so no promises yet).
3. Account self-service — password change and email reset.
4. Paid tier launch — subscriptions via Stripe; existing free features stay free.
5. Progress & spaced repetition — mark words as learning/known per song, with review scheduling.

Privacy

In short: we collect what's needed to run the site, and we try to look after it.

• Your account and content. We store your email address, your password in hashed form, and the material you save here, such as playlists, song lists, lyrics you paste and your word lists. Lyrics you upload are not shown to other users.
• Automatic information. Like most websites, our servers and logs may record technical details of your visit, such as IP address, browser information, and which pages and features were used.
• Automatic analysis. Where a song is analyzed automatically, we generally store statistics about it — word and grammar counts — rather than the lyric text, and those statistics may be reused across accounts.
• Third parties. We rely on outside services to operate the site, including Cloudflare for bot protection and an IP-geolocation provider for traffic reporting. Some of the above information may be processed by them.
• Security. Backups are encrypted and access is limited, but no website can guarantee that information is completely secure.
• We do not sell your personal information.
